I’m An Interior Architect – The Remodeling Changes You Should Make If You Want To Sell Your Home Quickly

Posted on May 24th, 2022.

When selling your home, you want to get the best value for it – and that sometimes means fixing a couple of rooms before putting it on the market.

Interior architect and HGTV star Brea Elles has revealed the spaces you should remodel when you're about to sell your home.

"There are spaces that are the most frequented and that's your bathroom and your outdoor space," she told The US Sun exclusively.

"These days, outdoor spaces are becoming so popular – neighbors are competing with neighbors about who has better outdoor space and whatnot."

Here's more about what spaces to remodel before selling your home:

BATHROOM

When it comes to the bathroom, you want to specifically focus on the floor of the bathroom.

"Because of the nature of the room, it's a wet area, you want to make sure that there is no water damage," Elles explained.

"Removing the shower pad, replacing it, and retiling is critical."

She noted that every single time she's had to redo a home, she will discover water damage in the bathroom.

As a rule of thumb, if the floors have been there for over 10 years, there's most likely mold and water damage underneath.

OUTDOOR SPACES

"Post Covid-19, a lot of people are spending time outdoors and a lot of people are connecting with that outdoor space," she explained.

"Updating this space will add value to selling and reselling of the house."

This means making sure your greeneries always look on point, your furniture is appropriate for your lifestyle, and that you add certain touches people are looking for these days.

If you can add a pool, you should go ahead because it'll pay for itself.

STORAGE

"Having adequate storage in your house is critical," Elles told us.

When remodeling, you want to make sure there is storage in every room of the house – whether that's by adding closets, cabinets, or furniture.

"A lot of the time, houses can have everything but if they lack storage then it doesn't appraise as much as it can," she explained.

No one really wants to move into a home and realize that they need to buy more furniture than necessary because they don't have anywhere to store their clothes, linens, or tools.

Previously, Elles had revealed the things you are doing that make your home look cheap – and why paint is super important.

"A lot of the times people have these colorful walls in a room and it really cheapens the house, because it just looks messy.

She is talking specifically about mixing a lot of colors in a single room, so you'll specifically want to stay away from yellow, red, and blue.

And you also don't want to be painting every wall a different bright color – you can pick one color and then add a few finishing touches throughout the room that don't involve painting a new wall.
